We created ten Specialist Crafts Centres throughout England, with the aim of developing a skilled workforce for the National Trust which demonstrates the highest levels of skills, promotes and preserves heritage building crafts, inspires people to take up traditional crafts skills and helps us to repair and conserve our special places, for everyone, for ever.

Typical roles

Want to apply your heritage building craft skills across our Specialist Crafts Centre? We mainly recruit for:

Joiners/Carpenters

Carrying our conservation bench joinery and specialist repairs to joinery on window, doors, mouldings and panelling and fabricating new bespoke joinery. Undertaking onsite original timber repairs, including roofs, staircases and historic gates, installing bespoke joinery and servicing repairing historic windows and doors. 

Masonry

Complete banker and fixing work including lime pointing and rendering, stone dressing, stone/tile paving repairs, stone/slate roofing repairs, installing bespoke new stonework into heritage buildings.

    I enjoy the sheer variety of work and the properties we get to work on. I have my favourites but they all have their own appeal! Having the opportunity to work with the other teams brings a great sense of community and of being part of something bigger that we are all contributing towards. If you enjoy working on historic buildings, uncovering the secrets of their past and ensuring they are conserved for the future, you will find a rewarding career with the National Trust.

    Stonemason

    I love my job role as Stonemason, it gives me the opportunity to help preserve some wonderful history and pass on traditional skills to apprentices. My work is always interesting and varied and brings fresh challenges which I relish. I’d highly recommend working for the National Trust they are a great employer and it gives you a chance to work on some very fulfilling projects in fabulous surroundings. I have an immense sense of pride being part of a wonderful organisation and being able to contribute to our historic fabric.

    Carpenter

    I mostly enjoy working on so many beautiful and diverse properties from Elizabethan, Tudor, Medieval Manors, Gothic Revival and interacting with the public. I feel honoured to be working on grade 1&2 listed buildings, knowing that I have a real piece of history in my hands, and the repairs I do are a part of history for future generations to enjoy, whether it's restoring oak panelling or elm doors.
