Cooking up fame at Greys Court
Last week, well known chef, food writer and broadcaster, Sybil Kapoor spent a day in the kitchen of Greys Court
She was demonstrating recipes for several online videos to accompany her forthcoming book Simply Baking, inspired by our places around the country, which goes on sale from this Monday.
Greys Court was chosen as the location as there is a strong tradition of baking at the historic property. The former owner, Lady Brunner, loved to bake cakes when she opened the house to the public and this tradition continues today as volunteers often provide baking demonstrations as visitors are looking around the house.
One of the recipes Sybil cooked during her visit was for Honey Cake, using honey produced on site at Greys Court. The particular recipe she used originates from Buckland Abbey in Devon, from a time when honey was used as a sweetener, before the importation of sugar from the West Indies.
After her visit Sybil said: "It was wonderful to cook in the old Tudor kitchen of Greys Court. It was like stepping back in time - the clock ticking away, the kitchen door open on to the garden and the bees humming outside. I half expected one of the room bells to ring for scones or a butler to come through the baize door! The volunteers who still cook in the kitchen as visitors walk through have a lovely job."
The tea room atGreys Courtis well-known for its own delicious home-made scones and other dishes which use home-grown produce from the kitchen garden whenever possible.
