Careerships - Train as a gardener

Train as a Gardener

As a Trainee Gardener you'll spend three years developing a thorough knowledge of our delicate living heritage. You'll learn what's involved in the care and management of historic gardens, with topics from propagation and pest management, to landscape design and the safe use of garden machinery. Developing your talents with people and plants, you'll work in a team of talented gardeners and sometimes volunteers to help your garden look its best for our many visitors.

Every day will be rewarding, and in more ways than you might think. As your garden grows and flourishes, you'll also gain lots of practical skills and experience, and will work towards a number of nationally accredited qualifications, including:

  • Amenity Horticulture NVQ Levels 2 and 3
  • Royal Horticultural Society qualification
  • Safe Manual Handling
  • Emergency First Aid Safe
  • Use of Pesticides and Knapsack Sprayer
  • Information Technology

Each year the National Gardens Scheme supports the National Trust with a generous donation to support the  trainee gardeners through their Careership training. For more information on the NGS, please visit www.ngs.org.uk (opens in a new window).

After completing your training, there are many career paths in gardening open to you with the National Trust. You can read the personal stories of two of our graduates here:
